Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australian ODI Team to Face Team India

The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from Australia's three-match ODI series facing India, as high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a surprise inclusion.

Performance Issues Result in Exclusion

The right-hander was left out from the ODI side following managing only a single run in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI batting appearances.

Labuschagne has played 68 ODIs and amassed 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64, but will now continue to press his claims a Test recall ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.

Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Changes

Recent performances suggest of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his ODI debut in the upcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a return to the Test team as Australia search for a solution to their top-order woes.

Pace Additions and Injury News

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after having time off since starring for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Team Announcement Strategy and Fixtures

Australia have announced a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 teams after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to seal a series clean sweep last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from 29 October.
